Definition: Glass paints (vitreous oxides) are powdered metal oxides mixed with liquids such as water, vinegar or oil. Applied to clear or colored glass with brushes and other implements, they create detail and shading. The painted glass pieces are placed in a kiln, where they are heated to over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. In the heating process, paint and glass fuse together to form a durable surface. Examples still exist in European churches from the 14th century.
