Assembling a Stained Glass Window
Part of - Process: Blending Tradition and Innovation
|
Image 1: The cut pieces of glass, with all the painted details already kiln-fired, are laid out on the pattern paper. Image 2: Strips of "H" shaped lead "came" are bent around each piece, the glass fitting in either side of the "H". Image 3: Joints of the lead are butted snuggly together and joined with solder. Image 4: The leaded panel is covered with putty, pushed into spaces between the "came" and glass. When dry, the putty provides strength and water-proofing. |
Image 5: Sawdust brushed over the panel removes excess putty. Image 6: When thoroughly dry, patina is applied to darken solder joints, and reinforcing bars added where necessary. Visit the St. Joseph's (Spreckels, CA) page to see the finished product, and Stained Glass for more examples. |
